Immune System ResponseThe company also has begun a melanoma trial of the drug with Merck's Keytruda, a treatment that works by helping the immune system fight cancer, to see if the combination has a more pronounced effect on slowing disease than either alone."In a study of 80 people with advanced melanoma, half of the patients who had all of their lesions injected appeared cancer free after an average of two months.

Provectus executives say the small development tab - along with relatively low manufacturing costs and easy handling requirements - could make PV-10 a less expensive new treatment. dc-Cover-lf85j3i254a8mep3al3mq5jtn0-20160226165119.The lesions were destroyed from the inside with no apparent harm to healthy tissue, researchers said. The Knoxville, Tennessee, company reported promising results in a small melanoma study. As it turned out, the Rose Bengal solution appeared to work on its own to dissolve tumors when directed injectly into them, recalled Provectus Chief Technology Officer Eric Wachter, a former scientist from Oak Ridge National Lab who co-founded the company. Rose Bengal fit the bill.. Agarwala, who has been conducting PV-10 trials funded by Provectus, also has run several cancer immunotherapy studies, including on Keytruda.Final results from an ongoing 225-patient melanoma trial of the experimental drug compared to chemotherapy are expected in early 2018.The 95 million company trades at about 49 cents per share, off a high of 98 cents last April, on very small volumes, possibly reflecting investor uncertainty over the drug's prospects. At the forefront is Provectus Biopharmaceuticals Inc, which is testing a reformulated version of the industrial dye on melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Luke's Cancer Center in Bethlehem, Pa.Rose Bengal's potential against cancer was discovered by accident. Amid the increasing sophistication, one investigational treatment stands out for its simplicity. A year later, 11 percent continued to show no signs of cancer, according to a report published the Annals of Surgical Oncology. The hope is that the drug, known as PV-10, will prevent melanoma from progressing beyond Stage III, in which the disease has spread but not yet to other organs, and allow patients with more advanced cancer to live longer.Pfizer holds a co-patent on PV-10 for use in combination therapies, and Boehringer Ingelheim has secured right of first refusal on use of the drug against liver cancer in China, the companies told Reuters. Now, some scientists are looking at its potential to fight various forms of cancer.

Modern cancer drugs supercharge immune systems, target specific gene mutations and pack modified viruses into vaccines. and suddenly realizing that they may have an oncologic value," said Dr Vernon Sondak, head of cutaneous oncology at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida."The biggest value will be if it can affect distant disease," said Hwu, who is not involved in PV-10 testing.Dr Patrick Hwu, an immunotherapy expert from MD Anderson Cancer Center, said PV-10 is one of several interesting tumor ablation techniques in the works...Rose Bengal, a cheap industrial chemical that turns yarn and food bright red, has been used China wholesale two color injection molding machine as a diagnostic staining agent for some time. Reported side effects included injection site pain and blistering. While some doctors are encouraged by the research, government approval is years off and not guaranteed. "It made the lasers obsolete.Provectus estimates the cost of PV-10 from laboratory to approval will be about 100 million, a fraction of the more than 1 billion in research and development for a new drug that the industry often cites to defend against criticism that medicine prices are too high.In 1998, scientists who later founded Provectus were looking for a safe photo reactive agent to use in an investigation of lasers against cancer. The salt was first patented in 1882 as a wool dye and has been used for years as a diagnostic stain in tests for jaundice in newborns and to detect eye damage. The company must replicate its early results on a bigger scale, and a US Food and Drug Administration decision is not expected before 2019.Rose Bengal, a cheap industrial chemical that turns yarn and food bright red, has been used as a diagnostic staining agent for some time."We've come to the conclusion that it is immune based," said Dr Sanjiv Agarwala, chief of medical oncology and hematology at St.Doctors said they hoped PV-10 combinations would not create the additional toxicity seen with some other combination therapies because of its mild side effect profile."This is one of the really neat examples of what we call repurposing, taking drugs that been around for years .In addition to PV-10 destroying injected skin lesions, researchers noticed shrinkage in untreated lesions and tumors as far away as the lungs, suggesting it may also provoke an immunue system response.Medi_. But the final decision on price is likely to be made by a bigger drugmaker, as Provectus plans to put itself up for sale once its drug is approved. Artificial intelligence must enhance the quality of an individual’s life and efficiency of public services. It is too early to regulate AI research. Imagine a disco ball suspended in front of us all creating myriad spots of light on the walls of an auditorium that we are sitting in. Prediction of medication requirement by civilians and the military, proactive drug discovery and effective distribution policies and a real-time surveillance system for patients are a few examples of this. MIT’s AI lab, semantic nets and machine translations were early efforts. What they say is that you would want somebody close to the power plug to cut the supply the moment you confirm a catastrophe.

The threat is that such systems may evolve into displaying unintended behaviour. Soon India will have a nation-wide quality training and research programme in AI. We need AI workers to generate reliable data from crowd sources when we look forward to AI for urban computing. It’s not easy though. What is closer to the heart of the aam adami is weak AI, which includes the personal assistant SIRI, Google’s search algorithm, and AI for eradicating war, disease and poverty. Luckily, some decision-makers are firm believers in the existence of “existential risk”.(The author is the head of department, Computer Science at the University of Mumbai).

In 1959, Alan Turing proposed the famous Turing test: If a machine can fool a human interrogator and prove its intelligence.Though the general impression is that India is good for experimentation and not an attractive market, brain-drained talents are returning to the country. The purpose of AI has never been to replace human experts. We require trained social workers interfacing AI-fuelled facilities for public welfare. Chess, checkers and poker-playing programmes analysed champions’ games and learnt to defeat them. Illuminate a dimension of it and get lost within the heaven it shows you. Where do we stand? According to a survey, 70 per cent of India’s 30,000 AI professionals have five to 10 years’ experienced.Today’s AI is about data science and self-learning systems. The funding for AI projects, however, needs to continue. Why is it then that people have started thinking that enjoying this heavenly beauty may lead us to hell? When stalwarts who have been involved in the evolution of this ball begin worrying, naturally a common person like myself feels like worrying, and therein begins my quest to explore AI, a term coined by John McCarthy in 1956. AI has been successfully deployed in the high speed injection molding machine Factory non-trivial healthcare solutions. without “watching” the human’s game. IT giants are showing interest in developing AI research in India. If the auditorium is our society, the core of the disco ball is artificial intelligence — popularly known as AI. Today’s news is that Google’s AlphaGo Zero — the latest evolution of AlphaGo, the first program to defeat a world champion at the ancient Chinese game of Go — learnt chess in only four hours by playing with itself, i.However, we will require more people in the fields of art, planning and cross-domain thinking.

The University of Mumbai in close collaboration with the Government of Maharashtra and with generous donations by the Wadhavanis is set to come up with India’s first Institute of AI. Obviously, what we call AI kept on changing. They are seen in quality enhancing domains including consumer services. Start-ups are seen in quantity dominating domains such as analysing legal contracts, public safety and selection processes in e-governance and personalised solutions for day-to-day healthcare activities and paying bills. IIT, DU and BITS Pilani have AI projects.AI has been successfully deployed in the non-trivial healthcare solutions. People wanted an assistant to do the things that were too difficult for humans. We need trained HR to instruct the machines precisely. We form six per cent of global AI companies, mostly experts in banking and finance. Slowly, a definition of AI came to entail making a machine do what humans do better.e. Policymaking for open data is the need of the hour to let them grow successfully. In 1948, a seed of several science fictions became reality with the efforts of John von Neumann, and the Church-Turing thesis: creating a machine for what you want it to do if you specify your wish precisely

I kept waiting, and the period strengthened me.What is your role in the film?I am playing Sara who is a die-hard romantic. How was it working with Mustafa? He is a confident actor. In a candid chat, she spills the beans on her upcoming film, working with newcomer Mustafa and her career among, other things. Edited excerpts from the interview: How did you bag Abbas-Mustan’s Machine? When my manager first told me about the film, I didn’t believe it.Kiara Advanitalks about bouncing back after the debacle of her debut film. I was already convinced about taking up the project when they approached me. He has great knowledge of cinema. Machine was one of the biggest decisions I have taken in my life — it was the best narration till date.S. I met him in Georgia since we didn’t really do workshops. He doesn’t come across as a debut actor. Were you disappointed when Fugly didn’t work?I was a little heartbroken considering it was my debut film. When I heard the script, I was 100 per cent sure of doing it.

My second film was important. But when you have a chance to star in an Abbas-Mustan film, why will anyone let it go? I have been lucky to do films which have been different from each other.. Thanks to that, I value every little success and I will always be grounded. I was waiting for good films after Fugly released. For me, content is also important. After I nailed the audition, I realised that the role wasn’t something I was comfortable with. Are you happy with how your career has shaped up?I am really happy that I started off with Fugly. He told me that I just need to believe in myself. Was it a conscious effort to take up this film, given that Fugly didn’t work at the box office and Dhoni was technically Sushant’s film? When I started with Fugly, I was excited that I was playing a raw and edgy character in high speed injection molding machine the film. Kiara Advani Kiara Advani, who marked her Bollywood debut with Fugly, didn’t have an easy journey in Bollywood. Despite having a short role in the film, I had so much to do. It broke my inhibitions as an actor. It is a thriller so if I say anything else, it will reveal a lot. It was like my training ground. He told me to be patient and that good things take a while to come.

I asked him to do a few readings. During Dhoni, it was an opportunity to work with Neeraj sir that attracted me. I have watched every film they have made, so I know that they give their heroines meaty roles. It is a typical Abbas-Mustan thriller. After a small role in M. Looking back, Kiara feels happy about the way her career has shaped so far. It is difficult to sum up my role in few lines. I would rather wait and do something worth while than take up bad films. I was very competitive with him on the sets. I took advice from Salman Khan. I went into a shell — I wasn’t aware how the industry functions. Dhoni: The Untold Story, which was mainly Sushant Singh Rajput’s film, the actress will next be seen in Abbas-Mustan’s thriller Machine. I just won’t sing and dance in a film

“So proud of the team!”AlphaGo had made history in October, by becoming the first computer program ever to beat a human professional player at the ancient Asian game, which many experts consider to be the most fiendishly complicated of its kind. “I would like to express my respect to the programmers for making such an amazing program.”Go, most popular in countries such as China, South Korea and Japan, involves two contestants moving black and white stones on a square grid, with the aim of seizing the most territory.Lee expressed surprise at his loss.Experts did not expect an artificial intelligence program to beat a human professional for at least a decade, until AlphaGo’s victory last year over player Fan Hui.

”Google executives say Go offers too many possible two color injection molding machine moves for a machine to win simply through brute-force calculations, unlike chess, in which IBM's Deep Blue famously beat former world champion Garry Kasparov in 1997. But 33-year-old Lee, a much more challenging opponent, was considered a bigger hurdle for a machine to vanquish.South Korean professional player Lee Sedol, the holder of 18 international titles, conceded defeat in a match broadcast live, with one YouTube stream drawing tens of thousands of spectators worldwide, while domestic television gave frequent updates.“Today’s win is symbolic, but nevertheless a very important step,” said Jang Woo-seok, a research fellow at the Hyundai Research Institute.“I didn’t think AlphaGo would play the game in such a perfect manner,” he told reporters after the match.

"We are in the conceptual phase of identifying approaches that could reduce the quantity of spent nuclear fuel without creating proliferation risks - a goal with significant economic and security benefits," NNSA spokesman Dov Schwartz said."It’s not the volume of the nuclear waste that’s the issue, but the radioactivity and heat it gives off as well as the fact that it remains dangerous for hundreds of thousands of years," he said.(Source)."That way you could address a country’s concerns about spent fuel without transferring ownership of the technology to them," said one of the sources. The first, called consolidation, reduces the volume of nuclear waste by taking apart spent fuel assemblies and crunching the waste down to two times smaller than the original volume – an approach that is considered costly but which doesn’t add much security risk. The sources did not name countries to which the service would be marketed, or where the waste would be stored after it is run through the equipment. The federal government designated Nevada’s Yucca Mountain as the sole permanent US nuclear waste repository decades ago to solve the problem, spending about USD 13 billion on the project, but it has never opened due to local opposition. The machinery would be encased in a "black box" the size of two color injection molding machine Manufacturers a shipping container and sent to other countries with nuclear energy programs, but be owned and operated by the United States, according to the sources, who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter. The NNSA confirmed a project to help other countries with nuclear waste is underway but declined to provide details.

Thomas Countryman, the State Department’s top arms control officer during the Obama administration, said the government should make headway on the domestic problem before helping other countries. The process, which gives off gases that must be contained, results in a waste product that has more environmental and health risks.A second technique involves heating radioactive pellets in spent fuel assemblies.Former President Jimmy Carter banned nuclear waste reprocessing in 1977 because it chemically unlocks purer streams of uranium and plutonium, both of which could be used to make nuclear bombs.US reactor builder Westinghouse, which emerged from bankruptcy in August and is owned by Brookfield Asset Management, hopes to sell nuclear power technology to countries from Saudi Arabia to India, but faces stiff competition from Russia’s state-owned Rosatom. The sources familiar with the NNSA’s deliberations said there are three basic ways that the physical volume of nuclear waste can be reduced, all of which are costly. The United States produces some 2,000 metric tons of nuclear waste each year, which is currently stored in pools or in steel casks at the nation’s roughly 60 commercial nuclear power plants across 30 states.US Energy Secretary Rick Perry visited Saudi Arabia this month for talks on a nuclear energy deal with the kingdom, despite pushback from lawmakers concerned about the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The effort is being led by NNSA Deputy Administrator for Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Brent Park, a nuclear physicist and former associate lab director at the Energy Department’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, appointed by President Donald Trump in April. That reduces volume, but concentrates plutonium and uranium – making it a potential proliferation risk. The NNSA’s Schwartz said the plans under consideration do not involve reprocessing, but declined to say what technologies could be used."The primary issue on this front … is not that the US can’t offer a low-volume option to potential buyers; rather it’s that the US still has no option for disposing of its own spent fuel," he said. The National Nuclear Security Administration is considering helping other countries by using technologies that could involve techniques such as crushing, heating and sending a current through the waste to reduce its volume, the sources said.

The US Department of Energy’s nuclear security office is developing a project to help other countries handle nuclear waste, an effort to keep the United States competitive against global rivals in disposal technology, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The Trump administration has made promoting nuclear technology abroad a high priority, as the United States seeks to retain its edge as a leader in the industry, amid advancements by other nations like Russia, and France – both of which already offer customers services to take care of waste.A third approach called pyroprocessing - developed at the Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory - puts spent fuel in liquid metal and runs an electric current through it. But they said they were concerned the processes under consideration could increase the risk of dangerous materials reaching militant groups or nations unfriendly to the United States. The NNSA declined a Reuters request for an interview with Park. The nuclear community is divided on whether pyroprocessing fits the definition of reprocessing. The United States is also struggling to support its own nuclear industry at home, with aging reactors shuttering, new projects elusive due to soaring costs, and an ongoing political stalemate over a permanent solution for mounting nuclear waste stockpiles. At least one of the techniques poses a security threat, they said. The push comes as the United States struggles to find a solution for its own mounting nuclear waste inventories amid political opposition to a permanent dump site in Nevada, proposed decades ago, and concerns about the cost and security of recycling the waste back into fuel.Edwin Lyman, a nuclear expert at the Union of Concerned Scientists, said NNSA should be less concerned about volume of waste and more concerned about the dangers that make it hard to store

The secular trend shows that year on year, this number increases. Surely, the GST could have been one of the reasons. In conclusion, the GST’s year-long jouney has seen both bumps and smoothening of the ride. The new tax regime, which was billed as the biggest taxation reform since Independence, had promised to remove tax on tax but it still remains as compensation cess.Even GST Network was decided by Centre to be converted into a 100 per cent government-owned company. Going foward, it promises to yield far better results in terms of revenue realisation as also the tax-payers’ experience. However, subsumption of 17 taxes into GST has led to greater formalisation.

It required a huge amount of political courage on the part of the government, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed enough of it to implement the most important tax reform in the country after independence.84 crore in FY18.Experts feel that difficulties being faced by people and companies are due to the complexity of the fiscal system and argue that it’s not yet the time to write an obituary for the tax reform. In order to encourage exports, the government has been refunding taxes paid on exported products to exporters. However, after the rollout of GST, the duty refund processes witnessed inordinate delay. Surely, taxpayers and tax callectors have had a mixed experience.Well beyond the taxation oversight, the GST data aggregation and the kind of analytics emerging from the same have immense possibilities of improving the way we run our economy. While it may be true, it would also be jumping to a conclusion if the rise in the number of people filing I-T returns is attributed to GST. For instance, the entire consumption pattern, raw material usage, supply chain and logistics are now available in a solid data format which can be used for productive purposes. Now that all merges into a single data pool and tracking of the stakeholders — from big corporates to small traders — would be well-synchronised. There were naysayers in plenty, but Mr Modi put at stake the political capital and bit the bullet..Then, the system had to be sensitised about new concepts such as the input tax credit, e-way bills, anti-profiteering etc. The taxes of Central excise, the state sales tax or VAT, octroi etc were being implemented with or without unified data aggregation. The controversial provisions of the liability to pay tax on reverse charge basis has been deferred till June 30.The shake-up in India’s taxation system with the Goods and Sales Tax (GST) has shown not only the inherent strength of the official machinery but also the resilience of trade, industry and consumers in adopting to an altogether new paradigm. The GST also aggregated the taxes into a solid database, driven by a smart technology backbone. The anomalies in GST has affected exporters greatly. While the way forward is being suggested by several experts, the GST Council should be complimented for ironing out some of the contentious issues like jurisdiction or dealing with different cesses, without really getting bogged down by any political considerations, some skirmishes here and there notwithstanding.

The number of people filing their I-T returns has gone up from 5. The provisions for tax deducted and collected at source also remain suspended till June 30.GST rates have been rationalised multiple times. In May, GST Council decided on a new format in which only one return will have to be filed in a month. Still a long way to go for smooth rollout26% widening of the taxpayer base in FY18 was seen, according to the data available in public. One of the major pull factors for the tax net was the input tax credit, but the bigger trigger was capturing of the data in a seamless manner. Big corporates could engage lawyers and chartered accountants to work their way out, the problem was more pronounced for the trading community, small manufacturers and small contractors.Lack of clarity in GST law as to the applicability of provisions and complex return filing procedures were the major problems.Calling the GST regime more "primitive" than the VAT, West Bengal finance minister Amit Mitra has recently said that the Centre is using ledger for manual record of refunds due to lack of interface between the GSTN and customs electronic date interchange as well as the DGFT.43 crore in the FY17 to 6.18% rise in direct tax collection was also noted over FY17. Many rates were slashed after the government realised that it had wrongly calculated higher taxes on these items. While the government has set up an anti-profiteering body to ensure that companies pass on low costs China plastic injection machine Manufacturers to end user, the absence of guidelines make companies worry.Somehow, a message went around that through this indirect tax system, data relating to direct taxes was also being captured and the end result was a big jump in the number of people filing their income-tax returns.Besides, the consumer had to be educated and sensitised, as the larger part of the economy was getting formalised.Formalisation of the economy through GST should not be seen from the prism of only a punitive measure whereby willy-nilly you have to be part of the taxation net.The fact that about 17 different taxes were subsumed into a single tax also led to greater formalisation of the economy. The initial stages were more difficult as confusion had arisen on various counts — the IT backbone, filing of returns, complexities in rates and the methodologies of fixation

A BJP leader said the chief minister’s yatra will focus on three things - "mood, media, mahol". The second phase of his campaign began in Maiyar, the abode of local presiding deity Maa Sharada, in Bhind district on July 18. "The Congress has nothing to say against me. Hence, the party is spreading lies about me and my government," said Mr Chouhan, while addressing a roadside meeting from his chariot. Even children are coming forward to wave and greet the chief minister," Mr Agrawal claimed. The Congress won 57, the BSP got four, apart from three independents. While male members greet the chief minister by waving their hands, women members shower flower petals on him from roof tops. The response from people clearly indicats that Mr Chouhan still enjoys the confidence of the people, he added.Secondly, it will help in mobilisation of party cadres and leaders who have been entrusted various responsibilities to make the crucial event successful in their respective areas ahead of the year-end polls. The Congress chariot will virtually chase its rival BJP "rath" to negate the goodwill generated by the chief minister among the voters for his party during tour. The chief minister is scheduled to address more than 700 roadside meetings and over 500 road shows during the yatra."By the end of the yatra, BJP will be assured of getting 200 out of total 230 seats in the year-end assembly polls," BJP national president Amit Shah had said while kicking off the yatra. The youth, women and other wings of the party, including the IT cell, will function in a coordinated manner to ensure success of the event, a strategist of the event told this newspaper.

Flagged off by BJP president Amit Shah, Mr Chouhan’s yatra, like the two earlier such campaigns he had held before the 2008 and 2013 Assembly elections, is billed to set the tone for the coming elections high speed injection molding machine Factory by re-establishing the popularity of the chief minister in a state which has a history of seeing two-party contests between the BJP and the Congress. "Our ‘pol khol’ (expose) yatra will call chief minister’s bluff," said Congress spokesman Pankaj Chaturvedy..He claimed that his party’s "Jan Jagaran Yatra" would expose various omissions and commissions in the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government and, thus, negate the impact of Mr Chouhan’s campaign."The ‘Jan Jagaran Yatra’ of the Congress is being led by second rung leaders of the party such as Jitu Patwari, Ramnivas Rawat, Surendra Choudhury and Bala Bachhan, indicating lack of seriousness on the part of the party in the campaign. The Congress, however, has alleged that the BJP is misusing government machinery to make its campaign a success. But, the chief minister appears unfazed. The chief minister is scheduled to address at least one huge public meeting in 224 constituencies and several roadside meetings from his chariot for which strategic places have already been identified along the route of his journey.

The attempt is to create a pro-establishment mood among people, ensure extensive coverage in media and generate a feel-good factor among people, he said.Mr Chouhan’s yatra covered three districts, Ujjain, Ratlam and Dhar in the first phase."Local administrations have been directed unofficially to arrange people for the chief minister’s meetings," Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Ajey Singh alleged. This, in a way, will also set the momentum for the Lok Sabha polls in 2019."The state has been divided into two parts for coverage of the ‘Jan Ashirvad Yatra’ which is planned in such a way that Mr Chouhan will cover different regions simultaneously with the help of two chariots," said BJP spokesman Rajnish Agrawal. Besides, this has demonstrated that the Congress has no mass leader to match Mr Chouhan’s charisma," Mr Agrawal said.Bhopal: All eyes are on the "Jan Ashirvad Yatra", the 51-day poll campaign launched by Madhya Pradesh’s three-time chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on July 14 from the temple city of Ujjain to drum up support for the ruling BJP in the Assembly elections in November. The BJP hopes that Mr Chouhan’s poll journey would harvest goodwill for the party in the year-end polls helping it retain power in the state for fourth time in a row.The political significance of the BJP’s "Jan Ashirvad Yatra" (drive to seek blessings from people) can be gauged from the knee jerk response it has evoked from the Congress that has launched a counter march called the "Jan Jagaran Yatra", public awareness campaign, on July 18 from Ujjain within just four days after Mr Chouhan began his 8,000 km poll journey in a luxury bus converted into a chariot."We are getting enthusiastic responses from people to the event.Firstly, it will strengthen the connect between the chief minister and the electorates when Mr Chouhan wades through the streets greeting people and attracting reciprocating gestures from them, besides giving them the accounts of his government’s performances. The yatra, which is scheduled to end on September 25 and coincide with the birth anniversary of BJP ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, will serve twin-purposes.In 2013 Assembly polls, the BJP had won 166 seats in the 230-member Assembly

But Brady argues that robot-human collaboration at the Staten Island facility, which employs more than 2,000 people, has given them a "beautiful edge" over the competition.New York: Hundreds of orange robots zoom and whiz back and forth like miniature bumper cars, but instead of colliding, theyre following a carefully plotted path to transport thousands of items ordered from online giant Amazon. Since Amazon went all-in on robotics with the 2012 acquisition of logistics robot-maker Kiva, gains have been indisputable, Brady says.A young woman fitted out in a red safety vest, with pouches full of sensors and radio transmitters on her belt and a tablet in hand, moves through their complicated choreography. This robot ballet takes place at the new Amazon order fulfilment centre that opened on Staten Island in New York in September. Robotics and artificial intelligence bring clear benefits to humanity, in terms of our health, welfare, happiness and quality of life," said Lynch, who believes public policy has a key role to play in ensuring those benefits are shared, and that robotics and AI do not sharpen economic inequality. The high-tech vest, worn at Amazon warehouses since last year, is key to the whole operation, it allows 21-year-old Deasahni Bernard to safely enter the robot area, to pick up an object that has fallen off its automated host, for example, or check if a battery needs replacing.

"But its easier to predict the jobs that will be plastic injection molding machine Manufacturers lost than the jobs that will be created. What role do Amazon employees play in what Brady calls the human-robot "symphony?"At every stage, the goal is to "extend peoples capabilities" so the humans can focus on problem-solving and intervene if necessary, according to Brady. But despite Bradys enthusiasm for a robotic future, many are suspicious of the trend, a wariness that extends to the corporate giant, which this month scrapped high-profile plans for a new New York headquarters in the face of local protests.Attempts by Amazon employees to unionise, at Staten Island and other sites, have so far been successfully fought back by the company, further fuelling criticism. Many suspect Amazons investment in robotics centres aims to eventually automate positions currently held by humans.

For Kevin Lynch, an expert in robotics from Northwestern University near Chicago, the development of collaborative robots is "inevitable" and will indeed eventually eliminate certain jobs, such as the final stage of packing at Amazon for instance. "Its a myth that robotics and automation kills jobs, its just a myth," according to Brady. "The data really cant be denied on this: the more robots we add to our fulfilment centres, the more jobs we are creating," he said, without mentioning the potential for lost jobs at traditional stores."I also think other jobs will be created," he said."What used to take more than a day now takes less than an hour," he said, explaining they are able to fit about 40 per cent more goods inside the same footprint. For some, these fulfilment centres, which have helped cement Amazons dominant position in global online sales, are a perfect illustration of the looming risk of humans being pushed out of certain business equations in favour of artificial intelligence. "We are not robots, we are human beings," Long said.Amazon now counts more than 25 robotic centres, which chief technologist for Amazon Robotics Tye Brady says have changed the way the company operates. In an 80,000 square-meter (855,000 square-foot) space filled with the whirring sounds of machinery, the Seattle-based e-commerce titan has deployed some of the most advanced instruments in the rapidly growing field of robots capable of collaborating with humans.Theyve created 300,000 new jobs, bringing the total number of worldwide Amazon employees up to 645,000, not counting seasonal jobs. Bernard only has to press a button and the robots stop or slow or readjust their dance to accommodate her. "The real question is, how do we prepare for our future with robots?". At a press briefing held last month as part of the unionisation push, one employee of the facility, Rashad Long, spoke out about what he said were unsustainable work conditions."The growth of robotics and AI is inevitable," he said.He is convinced the use of "collaborative robots" is the key to future human productivity and job growth. At the age of 51, he has worked with robotics for 33 years, previously as a spacecraft engineer for MIT and on lunar landing systems of the Draper Laboratory in Massachusetts
